The
Electronic Equalizer
"EFIE" Unit
Our
latest Vehicles are manufactured with a
(built-in)
On-Board Computer. A
section of the Computer is programmed to
continually adjust the voltage
to the Fuel Injector Rack
to maintain the ideal
Air to Fuel Ratio
to 14.7 to 1 (14.7
Parts Air to 1 Part Fuel)
for
best engine efficiency.
The
Equalizer, also
called the "EFIE,"
acts as a Bridging Unit between the Oxygen
Sensor and the On-Board Computer. It provides
an automatic, floating feed-back voltage,
which is added to the existing voltage being
produced by the Oxygen Sensor, and is sent
to the On-Board Computer, normally, for
a total of +475 mvdc.
A
Hydrogen Fuel Cell System, Retrofitted to
a Standard Vehicle Engine, which was not
programmed into the vehicle Computer, may
need to have an "Equalizer"
unit, installed
between the Existing "Oxygen Sensor
Unit" and the Computer. This will assist
the Vehicle Computer to automatically adjust
the ideal Air/Fuel Ratio.
This
is also a very useful item
in the event your State Vehicle Inspection
for air pollution becomes mandatory.
Details
and Tidbits:
The
Equalizer
comes complete with a manual ON/OFF Switch,
for Hydrogen Fuel Cell System control. In
the event the water level should drop too
low, blow a fuse or trip the circuit breaker,
the Oxygen Sensor Element will not detect
Hydrogen Gas being burned. In this case, you
would Manually turn the Equalizer OFF and
the system will return to normal operation
until the water level is restored, the circuit
breaker is reset and the system has been turned
back ON.
NOTE:
In general, older model vehicles, with standard
Carburetors will not use such a device as
an equalizer, but may be retrofitted with
a Hydrogen Fuel Cell type of system, and work
quite well.
How
It Works:
NOTE:
The efficient Air/Fuel Ratio should be 14.7
to 1.
This
means: 14.7 parts Air, to/ 1 part Fuel
When
the Hydrogen Fuel Cell System starts working:
Hydrogen Gas, mixed with the normal air, at
the Engine Air Intake Manifold, will develop
a leaner Air/Fuel
Ratio mixture of approximately
16 to 1, which is Too LEAN. At
this time the Vehicle Computer will increase
fuel passage to the Fuel Injector Rack, decreasing
the Air/Fuel
Ratio, to approximately 13
to 1. which is Too RICH
The
Equalizer unit,
adjusted properly, will normally correct the
Vehicle computer by adding voltage to the Oxygen
Sensor Unit, therefore changing the Computer
output capability, in turn will decrease Fuel
Flow to the injector rack, increasing Air/Fuel
ratio to normal of approximately
14.7
to 1, As it Should Be.
NOTE:
Older model vehicles with a Standard Carburetor,
without a computer system are more efficient
with Hydrogen Gas injected in the Air Intake
Manifold, and will not need the Equalizer Unit.
